Kits will be available at the Youth Services Reference Desk while supplies last. The activity ideas are also posted below if you prefer to use materials from home.
Frogs and lily pads
Materials: Craft fun foam cut into lily pad shapes, plastic frogs, a bin filled with water
*Come to the Youth Services Reference Desk to pick up a kit with materials (while supplies last).*
What: Fill up a plastic bin, a large bowl, or bathtub with water. Place the foam lily pads on the water and watch them float! Can you hop the little frogs across the lily pads? What happens if they fall off? Add some cups to the water play fun. If you add holes to the bottom of your cup you can create a rain storm for your frog.
Why: When many senses are engaged in an activity, young children make more connections and retain that information. Water play is a great sensory experience and an opportunity for our little scientists to explore the concepts of sinking and floating.
Extra ideas:
*With a grown up, find some more things around the house or outside. Place them in the water and see if they sink or float.
*Try a frog jumping competition! Push on the tab by your frog's back legs and watch him hop. Try to make your frog hop off the edge of a table and onto a lily pad. Can you jump like a frog too? How high can you jump? How far can you jump?
*Hold up 5 fingers and sing this song. Every verse, lower one finger until all the frogs are gone.
5 little speckled frogs,
Sat on a little log,
Eating some most delicious grubs,
YUM YUM!
One jumped into the pool,
Where it was nice and cool
And now there are 1, 2, 3, 4 green speckled frogs!
4 little speckled frogs,
Sat on a little log...
I would love to see what you create! Please send a picture to clewis@egvpl.org if you would like to share.
