Kits will be available at the Youth Services Reference Desk while supplies last. The activity ideas are also posted below if you prefer to use materials from home.
Paper towel kazoos
Materials: Paper towel roll, wax paper, rubber band
*Come to the Youth Services Reference Desk to pick up a kit with materials (while supplies last).*
What: Use scissors to make a small hole in a paper towel roll. Put wax paper over one opening for the paper towel roll and secure it with a rubber band. Sing ("doo doo doo!") into the open end of the paper towel roll to hear your funny kazoo sound. Don't forget to decorate your instrument!
Why: A sense of rhythm is important! We need rhythm for walking (think left, right, left, right...) and speaking. Languages all have a rhythmic quality that music emphasizes. Music is also an outlet for self-expression and creativity.
Extra ideas:
*Take your kazoos on a parade! Buzz a familiar song or make one up as you march around the yard or living room.
*Play the echo game. A grown up will hum a short snippet of music--try to copy it!
*Take turns humming (or "dooing") a song into your kazoo. The listener will try to guess the song!
*Try putting wax paper on a longer paper towel roll from home. Does it sound different?
I would love to see you busy playing! Please send a picture to clewis@egvpl.org if you would like to share.
