Kits will be available at the Youth Services Reference Desk while supplies last. The activity ideas are also posted below if you prefer to use materials from home.
Cereal Sand
Materials: Cheerios blended into powder, cups, and other sculpting/scooping toys
*Come to the Youth Services Reference Desk to pick up a kit with materials (while supplies last).*
What: Sand is fun, but for little ones who like to put things in their mouth it can be tricky to supervise. This cereal sand will sculpt into castles and is safe to eat. Just put it in a large bowl or plastic bin and start exploring.
Why: Sensory play is a great way for little ones to learn. In fact, the more senses involved in playtime, the more information they retain! Babies will enjoy touching, holding, and squeezing the "sand" and older children will be able to scoop, dump, mix, and create sand castles.
Extra ideas:
*Before you start building, get inspired with a story:
The Sandcastle that Lola Built by Megan Maynor
Duck & Goose Go to the Beach by Tad Hills
Sandcastle by Einat Tsarfati
*Use the cup to make bricks. How many bricks can you stack without the tower collapsing?
*Share new vocabulary during playtime. Narrate what you and your child are doing, ask questions, and describe how the different textures feel. Step back and let your child have room to create something of his/her own. When your child is finished, ask questions about what your child made and how it was done.
I would love to see you busy playing! Please send a picture to clewis@egvpl.org if you would like to share.
