Kits will be available at the Youth Services Reference Desk while supplies last. The activity ideas are also posted below if you prefer to use materials from home.
Materials: black cardstock, wooden skewers or paper straws, tape, and a flashlight/lantern/lamp from home
*Come to the Youth Services Reference Desk to pick up a kit with materials (while supplies last).*
What: Shine a lantern or lamp in a dark room and present a story using shadow puppets. Below are a few ways to make shadow puppets with your hands, or you can make shadows with the paper shapes provided.
Why: Oral storytelling gives children the opportunity to exercise their imagination, better understand narrative arc, practice communicating effectively, and build on listening skills.
Extra ideas:
*Take turns telling one continuous story. For example, "Once upon a time a man walked into a forest..." and then let the next person tell what happens next.
*Create a shadow puppet with your hands and see how fast others can guess what it is.
*Create new puppets by cutting shapes out from the extra black cardstock and attaching it to a stick.
I would love to see you busy playing! Please send a picture to clewis@egvpl.org if you would like to share.
