Take a kit home and use the activity ideas below as inspiration for your playtime! Each week brings something new. Kits are available at the Youth Desk while supplies last.
Water Marbles
Materials: Water Marbles, water, and a container
*Come to the Youth Services Reference Desk to pick up a kit with materials (while supplies last).*
What: Add water and watch them grow! After the marbles have soaked up the water, use them for a sensory playtime. Add cups and scoops to the fun as you fill, pour, and mix them up. Water Marbles are reusable--if they dry out, just add water again. If your little one tends to put things in his/her mouth, leave the marbles in a sealed bag and let your little one move them around through the bag. You can even tape the bag to a window for a beautiful stained glass effect while they play.
Why: Children learn with their senses, so it is great when we can offer them tactile experiences. The more senses involved, the better! Look at the different colors, feel the textures, listen to the sound when you drop one and it bounces-- but please, no tasting for this project! :)
Extra ideas:
Get out a large cup and a small cup-- measuring cups work well-- and fill them up. Which cup is bigger? Which cup holds more marbles?
Add more water to the marbles and see if they will grow even bigger. How big will they get?
Bury some small, plastic items in the marbles. Take turns using descriptive words to play I spy.
Ready for things to get a little messy? Go outside and add shaving cream to the mix!
I would love to see you busy playing! Please send a picture to clewis@egvpl.org if you would like to share.
