Take a kit home and use the activity ideas below as inspiration for your playtime! Each week brings something new. Kits are available at the Youth Desk while supplies last.
Colorful Noodle Threading
Materials: Dyed noodles (using liquid watercolors) and yarn with tape on one end for threading
*Come to the Youth Services Reference Desk to pick up a kit with materials (while supplies last).*
What: Thread the noodles on the yarn to create a colorful necklace or decoration. When you finish playing, take it apart and save it for an easy, quiet time activity.
Why: Threading noodles uses fine motor skills that are needed for writing and other everyday activities. This activity also lends itself to naming colors and sorting. These categorization skills are important for pre-readers as they begin identifying letters and words.
Extra ideas:
Practice naming and sorting the colors.
Can you make a pattern with your colorful noodles?
Read a book about rainbows:
Wow! Said the Owl by Tim Hopgood
Rainbow Stew by Cathryn Falwell
Rainbows by Martha E. H. Rustad
If you have toy trucks at home, use them scoop up and dump out the noodles!
I would love to see you busy playing! Please send a picture to clewis@egvpl.org if you would like to share.
