Take a kit home and use the activity ideas below as inspiration for your playtime! Each week brings something new. Kits are available at the Youth Desk while supplies last.
Dramatic Play Cooking
Materials: Bowl, ladle/mixing spoon, pretend soup ingredients, and recipe
*Come to the Youth Services Reference Desk to pick up a kit with materials (while supplies last).*
What: It's chilly outside and time to make soup! Use the materials provided to cook your own pretend soup. Follow the recipe and then create your own recipes! Add the ingredients, stir it up, and share it with your family. Let the soup cool and take a sip. Mmmmm!
Why: Pretend play is important for imagination and developing social skills. When kids play, they have to take turns, problem solve, and compromise-- all important real-life skills!
Extra ideas:
*With a grown up, write down your secret recipe. First, write the ingredients you need for your soup. Then, write the steps (in order). This is a fun sequencing activity.
*Your restaurant needs a sign! Get out the crayons and markers and start decorating.
*While you wait for the soup to cool, try singing this patience song (to the tune of Frere Jacque):
I am patient (repeat each line as a call and response)
Watch me wait
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6,
7, 8, 9, 10
I can wait
I am great!
*Read a few picture books all about soup!
