Take a kit home and use the activity ideas below as inspiration for your playtime! Kits are available at the Youth Desk while supplies last.
Magnets & Jingle Bells
Materials: Paper tubes, jingle bells, magnet wands
*Come to the Youth Services Reference Desk to pick up a kit with materials (while supplies last).*
What: First, tape your paper tube to a wall to keep it stable. Drop your jingle bells into the tube and try to get them out with your magnetic wand! Slide it up along the outside of the paper tube to bring your jingle bells to the top.
Why: Your little scientist will love the opportunity to experiment with magnets in this fun STEM playtime. Let your child take the lead in problem solving and using the magnet wand in different ways.
Extra ideas:
*Make a sensory bin by putting a variety of small objects into a large bin. Make sure some are metal (like the jingle bells) and some are not. Put dry rice or beans on top to hide the items. Then, drag your magnet wand through the sensory bin to find all of the metal items.
*How many jingle bells can you pick up with your wand? Count them and see if you can get even more the next time!
*Take your magnet around the house and see which items stick.
*When you are done experimenting, put your jingle bells on a string for a holiday bracelet.
I would love to see you busy playing! Please send a picture to clewis@egvpl.org if you would like to share.
