Join historian, Rae Slowik to hear stories of the Underground Railroad across Illinois, through Charley's perspective, providing insight into the injustice inherent within the institution of slavery.
In honor of Black History Month
"A Freedom Seeker named "Charley," (located at least seven times in the historic record all over Illinois), has links to abolitionists such as Sheldon Peck, but what do we really know about Charley? Join Rae Slowik of the Lombard Historical Society to hear stories of the Underground Railroad across Illinois, through Charley's perspective, providing insight into the injustice inherent within the institution of slavery.
The Sheldon Peck Homestead is a verified National Park Service Underground Railroad Network to Freedom Site. Sheldon Peck was a conductor on the Underground Railroad transporting freedom seekers during the course of his work as an itinerant folk-art portraitist and using his homestead as a safe haven for freedom seekers.
