Looks aren't anything!

It's National Zoo and Aquarium Month! Let's take a closer look at the naked mole rat! Click on the blue highlighted text for links to additional videos, books, activities, and information.

Is the naked mole rat cute and cuddly? No! Handsome and majestic? No! Is the naked mole rat extraordinary? YES!

This mammal behaves like an insect, regulates its body temperature like a reptile, and produces energy like a plant.

Naked mole rats are completely blind and spend their lives in tunnels beneath the ground. Dig into the underground world of these amazing rodents and uncover more about the remarkable life of the naked mole rat.

The naked mole rat is more closely related to a guinea pig than a mole or a rat. They barely feel any pain, can survive up to 18 minutes without oxygen, and can run as fast backwards as they can forwards. Learn more about this unsung hero of the animal kingdom.

Discover fascinating facts about these unusual animals in the ebook, "The Repulsive Naked Mole Rat" by Janet Levy. There are great photos too! It is available on Hoopla Digital with your EGVPL card.

There are more naked mole rat books available at the library. Reserve one online or by phone for curbside pickup with your EGVPL card.

Learn about the process of choosing a queen in a naked mole rat colony from the zookeepers at the Smithsonian's National Zoo. (Warning: there is great information here but there is a mild reference to violence)

Additional information about mole rats, including videos of naked mole rat babies (pups) can be found on the Smithsonian National Zoo's website.

Listen to zookeeper assistant, Michelle, talk about the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo's two naked mole rat colonies. Then enjoy watching seven minutes of their busy lives, narrated only by their chirps and squeaks.

Take a look at this cute video of playful naked mole rats at the Cambridge University Research Facility.

Watch this video to learn why children's book author, Mo Willems, decided to write the book, "Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressed".

Then enjoy this video read-along of the book!

And don't miss this very cute Weston Woods movie version of the book too! It is available on Hoopla Digital with your EGVPL card.

Would you believe the naked mole rat has his own rap song? Watch the music video, "The Naked Mole Rap", from the Disney Channel series, "Kim Possible".

Follow along with this video to learn how to draw a naked mole rat.

or learn how to draw a naked mole rat by following these step-by-step instructions

Check out this Mole Rat Gets Dressed Event Kit. You will find this printable mole rat, along with clothes patterns on the website.

In the mood to color? Print out this Wilbur, the Naked Mole Rat coloring page.

Or get creative and use play dough to dress a naked mole rat!

See... looks aren't anything at all!
